In my opinion, Cleveland Magazine rocks more than Cleveland itself!

  • I had started to take the whole freelance illustrator thing a little more seriously and began using my newspaper illustrations to show off my editorial illustration talents. I put together some pretty nice packets of samples, went back to the Graphics Artist's Market again, poured through it looking for a good match for my illustration style, and sent off mailings like crazy. I got two magazines that took me on: National Business Employment Weekly and Cleveland Magazine. The first, National Business Employment Weekly had me do an illustration for their October 17-23 issue and then shortly after went out of business, but Cleveland Magazine had me do an illustration for their March 1999 issue depicting a parking lot that the city had zoned underwater. They contacted me again a few months later for an illustration for their August 1999 issue for a story about a Cleveland Browns fan living on the west coast. It was pretty nice being published on slick magazine paper.

The first issue of Cleveland Magazine I was in also featured an illustration by Brian Michael Bendis. He's now a writer for Marvel and has written Spider-man. How's that for a brush with comic book greatness?
