I had always been a big comic book fan. Spider-man, back in the day, was my favorite and I waited around for monthly installments of what really boils down to a graphic soap opera on steroids. Though super heroes were cool, I had been exposed to several underground comics in college and Robert Crumb was one of many influences. I liked the fact that many of the comics were in black and white with color covers and many companies sprouted up around the big, mainstream ones and were offering different options. Self-publishing was pretty big then, too, so I thought it would be cool to make different, strange comics and try to get noticed by Fantagraphics or Last Gasp, two of the bigger small publishers. They were just more my style, really.
Self-publishing was really expensive back then (considering I also had school bills to pay off) so when I say 'self-published', that's just my fancy way of saying I spent hours at the local Kinko's making creative double-sided copies, stapling, trimming, taping, gluing ...and putting together a collection of my comics into a book. I drew off of life. I drew out of the imagination. I played around with my own twisted version of super heroes, and I put together some fairly fun stuff, I think. I haven't cracked open the spine of this book in ages, but when I decided to scan it and make my site this way, I sat down and read different pages that caught my eye. I still really like Stubbs & Portley, for some strange reason. I'm not a great, big fan of Dave the Dead Dog, but others who knew me back then always enjoyed that character and some even mention it to this day. It's really just Weekend at Bernie's with a pet dog and no cares of dragging it along during a walk. I may not be a big fan, but I still couldn't stop drawing him. Go figure. Anyway, it took awhile, but I eventually got it all finished. Nowadays 'self-publishing' is just a few scans away, so here it is years later presented in PDF format. Be warned: it's a big file. It's about 20 meg, so if you don't have a highspeed connection, you may want to pass. To continue, just click on the logo below. ![]() |
