When I moved back out to Ohio, I got a lousy job just to make ends meet at this place called Odd Lots stocking shelves and running the register. After a really short time of being there, maybe three months, I got a job at the local newspaper, the News Journal, and worked in the composition room putting together ads. I was there for another three months or so when another job in the advertising department opened up that offered more creativity and I moved there. I drew things for ads and there were a few cartoon things that I did and got noticed, and a year later I got the best job an illustrator could possibly wish for at a newspaper: the Head Editorial Illustrator and Graphic Artist. I added the 'Head' part to make it sound cool. In fact, I was the only guy there doing what I did. I was a one-man department.
A typical day started pretty averagely and not too creative (printing out the weather page after adding daily changes given to me via some subscription service, changing the date, changing the index on the front page, etc.) but the latter half of the day I built the front page of one section and worked on different projects like bonus sections, a weekly TV Guide layout, locator maps and instructional graphics. Among those projects were illustrations. They'd plan out stories for the Lifestyles section months in advance and those things that they couldn't easily get pictures for (pictures for a story about junk mail, losing your hearing, hiccups, and couples arguing over their decor to name a few) became mine to create illustrations for. I sometimes had anywhere from 3 to 6 illustrations a month to do. Some I had for a month before the deadline while others were needed tomorrow. I did them all.
It was like Christmas day every day a new one was published and I'd go over to this one department where newspapers were delivered to some girls in the advertising department whose only job was to sit and cut out ads for the salespeople to keep files on and to return to the advertisers with, so they had stacks to papers that were going to be trashed. I'd go through them on those days and pick out a couple of dozen or so of the page or section that had my drawing and I built a huge collection of them.
I can't scan these pages. They're just too big, but I did take the best digital pictures of them that I could. Some of the originals I still have and have scanned them. To see the originals, click on the SCAN link.
Enjoy.

* Note about the E-Coli illustration: I drew the background with oil pastells to give it a slick feel, put it under glass, and wrote the word out in the stomach with actual hamburger. My first meat illustration!
* * Note about the How's Your Hearing illustration: I later made a bunch of greeting cards featuring this character and I eventually renamed him 'Herman'.
* * * Note about the Older Adults Consortium illustration: I sculpted this in sculpy and make the entire scene with cardboard and various stuff found at the local hobby shop.
