  • It was maybe a month after I sent in the four drawings for Preston & Steve when I got a cryptic message from the show saying that some guy named Rob wanted me to draw something for a movie he was making. Apparently he saw my stuff and thought it would be perfect for his movie, The Curse of William Penn. After a little while of corresponding and brainstorming over the phone with Mik from the movie, I began some sketches and it wasn't too much longer before I grabbed all of my drawing gear, packed it all up into the car, and headed up to Philadelphia to meet these people at the University of Pennsylvania and have them film me.

It was great. Rob, Mik, and Dan are all incredibly great people, very accommodating to my needs during filming, and we came away from it with some good footage, I think. I was then invited to a premiere party only a month later (my segments were some of the last to be filmed) and I got to see the project as a whole. Man, it was cool. I know I've been excited about the stupidest part of the whole thing, but God help me, Kevin Bacon appears in it and talks about his father's role in this curse's past and that makes me officially one degree of Kevin Bacon. I can't wait until the next time that game arises because I can connect myself to Kevin Bacon in one fell swoop.

Anyway, the basic story behind the movie is this: a gentleman's agreement way back in history between William Penn and the city of Philadelphia agreed that there would never be any buildings built higher than his statue's hat. In the mid 80's Philadelphia began building higher, and now as a result, all of the Philadelphia sports teams have failed in their attempts at 'the big one' year after year. It seems far fetched, but hear these guys out. I saw the film during one premiere showing and the end of it had a mathematician which blew my mind with the stats and numbers surrounding this whole thing. The movie has many, many argument that point towards there being a curse on Philly.

I've since watched the Eagles' 2006 season and I believe the curse is real, too. How could it not be? Don't believe me? Go to PhrustratedPhan's The Curse of William Penn website and see for yourself.

Also be on the lookout. They're pitching it to HBO, Cinemax and Showtime.

    UPDATE:

The site above is no longer in service -I don't know what happened to it or even to any of the people involved in the film. They're simply lost to me. Also, the Phillies have since won the World Series, so my guess is everything was abandoned even though I talked to Mik shortly after their win and was told that the film was going to be reworked and repackaged to include the sports win and tie the curse into it all. As it turns out, a miniature model of William Penn was set atop the tallest building in Philly before the game, and footage was being put into the film to prove their theory. Even still, there's no hint anywhere of the film or it's makers.

I was also hired at the time to create the illustration for the DVD and the DVD packaging and I have the cover illustration included here and the DVD image here, as well. It was used in an ad that I once saw, but never got a copy of, unfortunately. I have one copy of the movie, and if it weren't for that, I wouldn't even have any proof of the film ever even existing.

So was the curse real or not? It's still a mystery, and so too is the disappearance of the DVD as well as the makers now. That might just be the scariest part of it all!
