  • Fresh out of college and I didn't know where to begin in conquering the world. There were so many angles I could approach from and avenues to take, but my college didn't exactly place me into any employment situations, so I had to do something to make some money. Not knowing where to go or what to do, I got a little job as a video store clerk where I made myself useful with various flyers and began to take on some freelance jobs. It was actually a good choice because I could rent free movies and used the store as my own video library. Need to draw a horse? I rented Black Beauty! Rabbits, gladiators, submarines, cars ...you name it and I'd rent a movie with what I needed. During this time I did some ads for the Delaware Lung Association's Pacesetter Relay that became billboards and t-shirts, even. (That's me in front of a billboard wearing the t-shirt, in fact!) They had me do a brochure for something called the Cardio Challenge and all kinds of other events, but in the meantime I read the newspaper and would redraw the crappy illustrations their in-house illustrator did and send them in to show them what they could have. Unfortunately, that didn't get me anywhere. My guess is the artist I was trying to oust was likely intercepting my mail. Oh well. It did, however, prepare me for working in the newspaper a few years later.

I had lots of fun with friends who would come by and we'd play hacky-sack in the parking lot (and in the sci-fi section after hours with the doors locked) and I'd rent them movies for free, too. It was great.

Anyway, I also worked on a few comic pages until I had enough to put together a self-published comic book entitled Frenzy.
